Maipo Valley is Chile's classic Cabernet Sauvignon region and the closest wine valley to Santiago — just 30–45 minutes from your hotel. It is home to Concha y Toro, Santa Rita, Cousiño Macul, Haras de Pirque and Almaviva, and the place where Carmenère was rediscovered in 1994. Tourevo operates private half-day and full-day Maipo wine tours with sommelier-led tastings, hotel pickup and a bilingual Jaguar XF chauffeur-guide.

The valley

Why Maipo is Chile's benchmark red-wine valley

The Maipo Valley surrounds Santiago to the south and east, climbing from the city's edge into the Andean foothills. Its warm Mediterranean climate, alluvial soils and cold mountain nights produce structured, age-worthy Cabernet Sauvignon — the style that put Chile on the world wine map in the 19th century, when families like Cousiño, Concha y Toro and García Huidobro planted pre-phylloxera French vines that still grow today.

The most prestigious sub-zone is Maipo Alto (Pirque, Puente Alto, Buin), at 400–800 m on the Andes piedmont. This is where Don Melchor, Casa Real and Almaviva are grown — three of the most awarded red wines in South America. In 1994, ampelographer Jean-Michel Boursiquot identified that much of the valley's "Merlot" was in fact Carmenère, the lost Bordeaux grape — making Maipo the rediscovery site of Chile's signature variety.

For travelers, Maipo's superpower is proximity: it is the only icon valley you can visit between breakfast and a late lunch, which makes it the default choice for layovers, business trips and first days in Chile.

FAQ

Maipo Valley wine tours · frequently asked

How far is Maipo Valley from Santiago?

30–45 minutes by private vehicle — the closest major wine valley to the city. Cousiño Macul is just 20 minutes away inside the urban limits, Concha y Toro in Pirque around 40 minutes, Santa Rita in Buin about 45. This makes Maipo the only Chilean wine valley you can comfortably visit in half a day.

What wine is Maipo Valley famous for?

Maipo is the cradle of Chilean Cabernet Sauvignon — often called the "Bordeaux of South America". Maipo Alto produces Chile's most awarded Cabernets, including Don Melchor (Concha y Toro), Casa Real (Santa Rita) and Almaviva (the Rothschild joint venture). The valley is also where Carmenère was rediscovered in 1994.

Which wineries can I visit in Maipo Valley?

The classic combo is Concha y Toro + Santa Rita. Other notable Maipo wineries we arrange privately: Cousiño Macul (1856 heritage cellars), Haras de Pirque (Antinori partnership), Almaviva (by application) and El Principal.

Is half a day enough for a Maipo Valley wine tour?

Yes — that's Maipo's main advantage over Casablanca or Colchagua. Our private half-day (5 hours, USD 145 p/p) covers two icon wineries with a 4-wine sommelier tasting and returns you to your hotel by mid-afternoon. Add a vineyard lunch to make it a relaxed full day.

How much does a private Maipo Valley wine tour cost?

USD 145 per person (from 2 travelers) for the half-day classic; USD 168 for Concha y Toro tour & tasting; USD 120 for the Concha y Toro night tour. All include hotel pickup and return, bilingual chauffeur-guide and tasting coordination. Winery entrance fees are paid at the venue.
